He enlisted for the Spanish-American War at at Whipple Barracks, Prescott, Yavapai county, Arizona Territory, on 30 Apr 1898 in Company A, 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, under the command of Captain Bucky O'Neill (the Arizona Rough Riders). At that time he was receiving his mail at McCabe post office in Yavapai county. Officially he was a "farrier" for the company. Private Wallace Willard fought in the battles of Las Guasimas on 24 June 1898, San Juan on 1 July 1898, and the siege of Santiago. He contracted malaria while there; and was discharged at Camp Wikoff, Long Island, New York on 15 September 1898.  Captaim Frank Frankz [spelling?] signed his muster-out paper.[105],[106]

Returning from the war he worked as a quartz miner from 1898 to 1903 in the area of Prescott, Arizona.[107]

Sally Munds Williams wrote: "Many of the Rough Riders came home wounded and very ill from the ravishes of the war and malaria fever and Wallace Willard was one of them; it took him at least a year to recover his health."[108]

1900 Census:  Wallace Bernard Willard. 14 Aug 1869, d. 17 Apr 1923);, called Wallace Willard, appeared on the census of 13 Jun 1900 boarding with John A.      From 1905 to 1913 Wallace was at Seligman.[114]

20 September 1906:  Ò(From Tuesday's Daily.) AINSWORTH NOMINATED.

A score and a half of dissatisfied Arizonians former members of all political parties, coming from four or five counties, met at the Dorris theater in this city yesterday morning for the purpose of devising ways and means for surrendering this territory into the hungry maw of New Mexico and at the same time to insure the re-election of Mark Smith as delegate to congress. These conspirators against the peace of Arizona and the integrity of the republican party called themselves a joint statehood convention, state-builders and such other epithets as suggested themselves to the various orators.

The so-called convention naturally organized a party called the statehood party and threatened to hold other conventions from time to time. A party cannot fall in line and keep step behind an abstract principle. It must have a standard bearer, a drum major, so to speak. General C. F. Ainsworth was selected for this delicate job and he was unanimously named as candidate for delegate to congress.

If a party must have a candidate, a candidate must have a platform. One was provided. It pledges the "party" in favor of joint statehood, but apprehending that that is some distance up in the air and may not "light" for a while it urges congress to enact certain legislation for the government of the territory until the surrender of it to New Mexico may be completed. The "party" favors the election of judges by the people; the taxing of the output of mines; the establishment of a three-cent railroad fare rate; mine inspection, a territorial board of equalization which shall have power to equalize all kinds of property and the assessment of railroads in the same proportion in which all other classes of property is assessed.

The "party" further recognizes the existence and rights of organized labor, which by the way has been pretty well recognized all over the country for a great many years. ...The representatives from Yuma were W. H. Buck; Wallace Willard, R. A. McPherson, W. W. Woodman and P. O. Spitler.Ó[115]

1909:  The Territorial Prison at Yuma remained open until 15 September 1909, at which time it was transferred to Florence.[116]

Wallace Bernard Willard. 14 Aug 1869, d. 17 Apr 1923); was named in the obituary of Lewis Augustus Willard. 28 Dec 1831, d. 9 Jun 1911); which appeared on 17 Jun 1911.[117]

From 1913 through 1917 he carried the U.S. mail by saddle horse and lived near Cottonwood, Yavapai Co., Arizona.[118]

Wallace and Cora obtained a marriage license on 5 March 1915 in Yavapai county, Arizona Territory. ÒCora B. ShermanÓ was of San Diego county, California and "Wallace B. Willard" was of Yavapai county, Arizona.

They were married at Jerome by Rev. Edward J. Curtiss in the presence of C. H. Rutherford and W. P. Scott.[119]

On 5 February 1917, Wallace applied for an Òinvalid pensionÓ from Calipatria, California, where he was engaged in stock raising. He said he'd been in the field hospital in Cuba, also a private hospital in Selyman [i.e. Seligman, Yavapai Co., Arizona] and Cottonwood, Arizona, and the United Verde Copper Company hospital in Jerome, Arizona.

His specific complaint is of Òsever stomach trouble that has become chronic causing continual suffering and loss of strength and health from vomitin from 8 to 20 days in succession that he is unable to work & earn a livelihoodÓ.

The record shows that he had Òmalarial fever in line of dutyÓ from July 31 to August 5, 1898; and again September 1, 5, 6, 9, 12 in 1898. He returned to duty. At the time of his discharge from the army in September, the examining physician found a Òslight disability from malarial fever, poor food and hard campaigning in Cuba.Ó It was estimated that he would be completely disabled for the next two months.

To investigate WallaceÕs 1917 disability request, a civilian physician was authorized to examine him and would be paid $3 for the exam, with no allowance made for time, mileage, or the surgeon's traveling expenses as the claimant would present himself at the office of the surgeon. The physician was to pay particular attention to the condition of the stomach and bowels.

     J. B. Smarr of Wenden, Arizona wrote to say "I have known Wallace Willard for about 25 years. I knew him on his father's ranch on the verde river below Jerome, Arizona and he was a stout healthy man. But since he came back from the Spanish American war he don't look like the same man. He passed my place in Wenden [Yuma county], Arizona going to California. He told me he was subject to stomach troubles since the war. I saw him the next day on the road and he was laying down in the wagon and had a man driving. I came back in about 5 days and he was sick at the old Desert Wells [Yuma Co.] vomiting all the time. I wanted him to let me take him to the railroad but he said he would just have to wear it out. This was about Jan 15, 1917. I think he stayed at the well about 7 or 8 days."

Mrs. Julia Willard of Cottonwood, Arizona [Wallace's step-mother] wrote "I saw him [Wallace] when he first returned from the war, a physical wreck compared to what he was before he went there. Then he was away from home for several years and I knew that he had very severe sick spells at intervals... did not understand the nature of them until I saw him in Jan 1915. The attacks seemed to be severe stomach trouble of a very serious character as he was unable for several days at a time to retain anything at all on his stomach. Then again in June of the same year I saw him again when he was convalescing after one of these attacks and knew of him having them on several other occasions." Her statement was sworn before Charles D. Willard [her husband's nephew] Notary Public.

Thomas B. Farrow of Cottonwood, Arizona wrote "I am writing in behalf of Wallace B. Willard whom I have known a long time as he used to be a neighbor of ours. About May 25, 1914 he sent for me to take him to the hospital at Jerome. I found him in much pain with cramps and vomiting. He had a number of hard vomiting spells on the way, a distance of 10 miles. I saw him at his ranch again the following January with the same kind of sick spell. Again in June 1915 I saw him sick the same way. These were not slight stomach sickness but were very serious requiring the service of doctors and were very hard to handle."

Mrs. Arthur Nichols [Wallace's sister Edna] wrote "I have seen Wallace Willard in several sick spells, described as follows. the latter part of May 1914 he was taken with severe cramps and nausea and was taken to the hospital. the spell was so severe that the men who took him to the hospital feared they would not get him there alive... Again in Jan 1915 I saw him in a similar attack.... In June 1916 he was taken sick while carrying mail on a rural mail route and was obliged to stop for several trips before he could resume his work." Sworn before Charles D. Willard, Notary Public

Wallace was examined by B. C. Chadwick, M.D. on 1 June 1917. His examination as follows: "There is no distention of the epigastrium but there is marked tenderness on palpation. The abdomen is not tympanitic but is hypersensitive to firm pressure generally. The applicant states that he must limit himself to a small amount of food owing to dread of an attack of vomiting. Between attacks he feels comparatively well. He is medium well nourished, big bones, somewhat flat chested. There is no cough or expectoration, lung sounds are normal but faint. Muscles are flabby. He is of erect stature and normal gait. The spleen is impalpable and normal in outline. the liver is normal in outline except that it's lower border extends about an inch below the lower rib and is somewhat resistant to pressure. It cannot be thoroughly palpated owing to extreme tenderness. The heart sounds are normal. The arterial system does not show degeneration. Urinary organs are in a healthy state. There are no evidences of vicious habits. The palms are not calloused."

Another medical exam was done on 11 July 1921 and this time Wallace has a new complaint. "Hernia first discovered 4 May 1918. Carrying a heavy timber while walking on wet ground. Feet slipped plank striking him across abdomen rupturing him. About once every six month has stomach spelling (vomiting) for 1 to 3 weeks." The physical exam: "Right inguinal hernia. Irregular heart beat, about every 10 to 12 the beat is entirely missed. Physically he has felt no discomfort from heart. Stomach trouble & examination negative. Comes on about once in every 6 months, vomiting & distress; nothing seems to stop it. --[illegible]-- like tumor or obstruction there. Hernia caused by applicant slippin on wet ground while carrying a heavy plank... Cause of heart and stomach trouble undetermined." A follow-up report states "Right inguinal hernia is complete, beginning to be scrotal. Size of rings now one to one and one half inch diameter, indirect."[120]
